My advice/tips for rookie bettors.
Pick a sport and nerd out.
Learn about value betting.
Try and beat closing lines (bet early).
No accas/parlays.
Home underdogs are your friend.
Bookies set odds partly on probabilities and partly on them enticing people to bet, and more besides, learn to read odds and you'll be able to identify value.
Take your time, there's literally 100s of matches per day, so try and learn a little everyday, don't rush it, small bets for first year or two to learn the trade.
No alcohol.
Try and be objective about why a bet won or lost. Maybe it was a good bet and the team you bet against got lucky, or maybe your logic was wrong from the beginning, keep learning.
Logic not emotion.
